Partially an adaptive reuse project, the site sits in the middle of Arvind Mills which has a dense built fabric producing denim and other fabrics. The Arvind group is one of the few remaining manufacturers that are still using indigo to dye their denim and the museum is designed to showcase the artists in the country working with the medium. Originally envisioned as a temporary structure, the project program was overhauled after detailed analysis of the opportunities that the site presented.
Sitting on an existing raft abutted by two blocks, the project is a careful intermingling of the old and the new. The existing structural cues were extended upon with an elegant steel structure. The conventional beams and columns are given up in favor of meticulously designed members that are much more elegant in an exposed setting of a museum.
